| | the birds | ] | A dozen years in California left me forgetting what seasons were like. Sure, there's some seasonal variation there - hills are brown in summer. But there's not much sense of fall, winter or spring and the cycles.
Now that I've been back in a more seasonal climate a few years I appeciate it all the more. The leaves, the winter, the first signs of spring. The birds, the buds, the first flowers. What I notice more than anything too is the sounds. Walking late at night gets so quiet in winter. So when the peepers, bugs and birds come back to life it's so refreshing. The birds singing... the cicadas. It's a symphony of sound to match the visual tapestry of a new cycle of growth.
I've tried doing some seasonal audio recordings to capture the soundtracks of my life here. It's hard to get a pure recording of birds, but over time I've grown to appreciate that the cars winding down roads in the distance, the dogs at night, the trains hitting the horns a few miles away are all just part of this symphony of life.
I love spring. I wish it would stay like this all summer here. But it's partly the celebration of rebirth and cycle of seasons that makes spring so refreshing. |
